PDO utilizes a 2.5D game engine, with the background maps and scenery in 2 dimensional graphics, and characters and monsters in 3D graphics. With high quality graphics, the 2.5D graphics outscore other pure 3D games at some levels, but require less hardware resources.

Five-Element System

In traditional Chinese philosophy, natural phenomena can be classified into the five elements: metal, wood, water, fire and earth. These elements were used for describing interactions and relationships between phenomena. The doctrine of five phases describes two Cycles of Balance, a generating cycle and a restraining or destruction cycle of interactions between the phases. The generating cycle is: Wood feeds Fire; Fire creates Earth (ash); Earth bears Metal; Metal collects Water and Water nourishes Wood. The restraining cycle is: Wood parts earth; Earth absorbs water; Water quenches fire; Fire melts metal and Metal chops wood.



Phoenix Dynasty Online incorporates the highly acclaimed Five-Element Promotion and Restriction system based on ancient Chinese philosophy. Furthermore, the concept of "Gifted 5E", "Promotion and Restriction Relationship between 5Es", and the "Training System of 5E Nimbus" permeates throughout the game. For example, the "Gifted 5E" concept enriches the personal characteristics of each character class, and the "Promotion and Restriction Relationships between 5Es" are introduced to the production system so that players can first obtain materials from the monsters and then make the products on their own, while the "Training System of 5E Nimbus" is a process of players drawing nimbus from creatures for energy reinforcement so that they can practice and refine their fighting skills.


It is important to play PDO with a good understanding of the Five-Element System. All things in game, such as characters, skills, monsters, weapons and equipments, can have their unique Five-Element attributes. A player can select and develop a major elemental attribute associated with his/her character. Furthermore, he/she can develop major/minor skills based on the Five-Element system by completing different quests to get skill books and learn from them. The monsters in the game also have different Five-Element attributes, and when fighting them, a player might need to use weapons that restrict them. When forging advanced weapon or other equipment, a player need to select the materials carefully based on the Five-Element principle, in order to obtain superior results. The Five-Element system has introduced a new level of fun and excitement to PDO players.

Mount System

• Mounts also have five elements attributes associated with them, such as - Tiger (Metal), Bull (Wood), Shanyi (Fire), Bear (Earth) etc.
• Mount can add extra attack or defense attribute to players
• Players can fight and PK while riding their mounts


Guild System

The guild system in PDO has the following features:
• Creation of guilds and guild colonies
• The guild colony can upgrade together with its guild
• Creation of guild defensive fortification.
• Guild wars over different territories.
